The Hai Van Mountain Pass- One of the spectaculary coastal roads in the world

Hai Van Pass – One of the Most Breathtaking Coastal Roads in the World

Overview of Hai Van pass

Hai Van Pass, also known as the Ocean Cloud Pass, is located on the border between Thua Thien-Hue Province and Da Nang City, forming part of the Truong Son Mountain Range. With a length of 21 kilometers, it is the longest and most scenic mountain pass in Vietnam, rising to an altitude of 496 meters above sea level.

Originally built as a strategic military route over 700 years ago, Hai Van Pass has since become one of the most iconic coastal roads in the world – famous for its blend of lush mountains, misty clouds, and panoramic ocean views. For adventure seekers, especially those on a motorbike tour from Hue to Da Nang (or vice versa), the Hai Van Pass promises an unforgettable journey.

Why is Hai Van Pass Special?

The Hai Van Pass is a winding road that snakes through rugged mountains with dense jungle on one side and the sparkling East Sea on the other. On clear days, travelers are treated to sweeping views over:
 • Da Nang Bay
 • Tien Sa Port
 • Son Tra Peninsula
 • Cham Islands
 • And long stretches of pristine white-sand beaches

Since the opening of the Hai Van Tunnel in 2005, most heavy vehicles now bypass the pass, making it a quieter and safer route for motorbikes and bicycles, with only the occasional oil truck.

Top Stops Along the Hai Van Pass

Here are the best viewpoints and photo stops along the Hai Van Pass:

1. The Cliff Viewpoint

A rocky ledge overlooking the sea is a must-stop. Locals have set up a rope and water stall here, and it’s the perfect spot to take panoramic photos with the vast ocean behind you.

2. “Folded Sleeve” Hairpin Turns

Near the top of the pass, you’ll find dramatic hairpin bends where riders often stop to snap photos. A convex safety mirror installed at the bend adds a unique photo opportunity with the curving road in the frame.

3. Hai Van Gate & Historical Bunkers

At the summit, you’ll reach the Hai Van Gate (Hai Van Quan) – a historic stone gate marking the border between Da Nang and Hue. Originally built during the Tran Dynasty and later renovated under King Minh Mang (Nguyen Dynasty), this site also features old French and American military bunkers with views down the mountain pass.

4. The Panoramic Lookout

The top of the pass provides parking and refreshments, making it an ideal place to rest, rehydrate, and take in the view. Don’t miss the chance to walk up to the bunkers for the best angle of the winding road below.
